When the plant cannabis is mentioned, the first image that comes to mind is likely someone smoking marijuana, whether for recreational or medicinal purposes. People may tell you that you can’t use cannabis without getting high. But is that true in every case?
You might be familiar with marijuana, but what you might not know is that there’s another substance derived from cannabis called cannabidiol, or CBD. Studies have shown that CBD can be helpful in treating anxiety disorders and epilepsy. It’s also currently being tested as a way to treat bipolar disorder, severe autism, and psychosis. And the surprising part is that by itself, it won’t get you high.
According to a report by the World Health Organization, study participants who were dosed with 600 milligrams of CBD did not experience the intoxication or euphoria associated with marijuana, nor did they experience feelings related to addiction, such as withdrawal and tolerance. This is because CBD is not the same as THC, the substance in marijuana that bonds with receptors in your brain to produce a high.
Despite the potential usefulness of CBD, there has been some confusion about its legal status, especially in California. Apparently, the laws are unclear on whether or not it’s legal to purchase CBD outside of state-approved marijuana shops. There is currently a California bill meant to push for more freedom in selling food products with CBD, since the state currently considers any food product with CBD “adulterated” and unfit for selling.
There is a whole new frontier of possibilities for CBD and how it may be used. For now, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on its medical and legal development and its potential benefits.
