Veterans Are At Risk for Exposure to Asbestos

admin March 7, 2013

U.S. veterans have a higher chance of developing health problems associated with toxic asbestos exposure during their military service, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

If you’re a Vietnam or Korean War veteran, you might need to speak with asbestos lawyers due to your exposure to asbestos during your military service. What is asbestos? Asbestos is a fibrous carcinogenic silicate material that has been used in the manufacturing of many goods, ranging from building materials such as roofing shingles to car parts and even heat-resistant fabrics. However, because of the health problems associated with asbestos exposure, it was no longer used in many new construction materials after the early 1970s. Still, there are many people, including U.S. veterans, who were exposed to toxic asbestos without even knowing it.

How do you know if you were exposed to asbestos and need to speak with Navy asbestos attorneys? According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, if you were in the following occupations you might have been exposed to asbestos: “mining, milling, shipyard work, insulation work, demolition of old buildings, carpentry and construction, manufacturing and installation of products such as flooring and roofing.” This includes “Navy veterans who served on ships whose keels were laid before 1983.”

Unfortunately, exposure to asbestos can lead to major health problems, such as mesothelioma cancer and lung cancer. If you would like more information about veterans at risk for health problems associated with asbestos exposure. The website offers legal advice as well as information about doctors, mesothelioma treatment, and more.
