Meds lower risk of HIV in couples having condomless sex

Antiretroviral therapy vastly lowers the risk of spreading HIV for couples in which one partner has the virus and the other does not, even when they have condomless sex, researchers said Tuesday. The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) is the largest of its kind to examine the question of how risky it is for so-called serodiscordant couples to have unprotected sex when the infected partner is suppressing his or her viral load with medication. The research involved 900 couples, about two-thirds of whom were heterosexual and the rest men who have sex with men.
