Dental work involves a lot of cutting and extractions of gums and teeth, which is often a painful and uncomfortable process for patients. For this reason, dentists offer patients the option of dental anesthesia. Although this diminishes pain, they come with some possible side effects.

Hematoma – Hematomas occur when a dentist gives an injection that causes a puncture or a nick to a blood vessel. After some time this nick can cause the blood vessel to leak and collect underneath the gum tissue.

Paresthesia – Dental anesthesia are offered to numb the tissue, but in some cases the numbness takes longer to wear off, causing patients to experience temporary paralysis or numbness in their mouth or face.

CNS Toxicity – The body absorbs the chemicals used for dental anesthesia. The chemicals are designed to affect the brain, but in some cases, they can lead toxicity of the central nervous system (CNS). Symptoms of CNS toxicity include unusual excitability and irritability coupled with a rapid heartbeat and difficulty breathing.

Nitrous Oxide Side Effects – Nitrous oxide can cause some side effects, which include hypoxia (subnormal amount of oxygen in the blood). The side effects of hypoxia include dizziness due to the low oxygen flow to the brain. Other symptoms can include portions of the body to expand. Therefore you should inform your dentist if you have a bowel obstruction, sinus, middle ear problems or a collapsed lung.

If you suffer from temporary or permanent symptoms following a dental procedure, it best to contact a dental malpractice lawyer orange county.
